The peanut is native to Central America and northern Argentina where some species grow in the wild. From these regions the Indians spread across the American continent in two directions, west to north to Peru and Mexico. In the sixteenth century the Spanish colonists introduced it in Europe and later the merchants in Asia, Africa. According to a local legend, the first place where the peanut was planted in Europe was in the village of Puzol, Valencia, in 1778.
